CLIFTON SPRINGS/MARION: Leander “Hutch” Hutchinson entered into rest on November 9, 2023 at the age of 89, at Clifton Springs Hospital, after a brief and unexpected illness. Raised in a large household, Hutch grew up believing in hard work. Hutch’s career paths led him down many avenues, including telephone switchboard builder, cabinet maker, construction, auto repair, tool maker, maintenance, and law enforcement. Hutch’s several college degrees earned him the title of master machinist. Hutch operated gunsmith shops in Marion and Cayuga, N.Y.. He proudly served 8 years in the United States Navy. Throughout his life, Hutch was a dedicated sportsman, with passions for hunting and firearms, fishing, and boating. He loved to tell stories, which often included his fisherman’s knack for embellishment, which made him all the more endearing. Hutch proudly embraced his Native American heritage and in his later years took up beading and jewelry making, regularly giving away earrings to people he encountered for nothing more than a smile. Hutch believed strongly in his role of protector and provider of his family and will be fondly remembered as someone who loved his family passionately and held great pride in those he cared about.
Hutch is predeceased by his first wife of 50 years, Verna M. Hutchinson; daughter, Pamela Wright; grandchildren, James Jr. and Nicole Wright; and sister, Ethel Oehmler. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Carol LangenHutchinson; children, Stephen (Patricia) Hutchinson, son-in-law, James Wright, and step-daughter, Renee (Antonio) Rolon; grandchildren, Stephanie (Gene) Freese, Leandria (Chad Barnes) Hutchinson, and step-grandchildren, Alaysia Colon, Reyna Colon, Antonio Rolon Jr.; 5 great-granddaughters, 1 great-great-grandson, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service 11am, December 9th at the Reed Corners Church, 4030 NY-247, Canandaigua, NY 14424. More info to come on a family gathering that will follow. In lieu of flowers, family asks that donations be made to the Discover Cayuga Lake Organization, 110 N.Tioga St., Suite 303, Ithaca, NY 14850.
