MARION: Entered into rest on April 24, 2021 at the age of 95. Predeceased by her
husband, Harry; survived by daughter, Martha (Robert Curtis) Rich.
Ellen was born on the family farm in East Palmyra to Leah Poyser and Vernon Young,
and attended East Palmyra public school. For her eighth-grade graduation, her mother
worked at Bucks Fashion Shop and sent for a blue organdy dress from NYC. Ellen
was awarded her certificate by George Young her grandfather and School Board President.
She attended Newark Public High School where she was president of 3T club and involved in many activities, she graduated with honors in 1942. She was valedictorian and became class president after Alfred Ketchum had to step aside. She attended Keuka College Cadet Nurse Corps program and graduated as valedictorian in 1946.Â
Ellen Young got engaged and married Harry Edwin Rich of Marion in 1947. Harry and Ellen built an Adirondack style cabin with a large stone fireplace on the edge of the farm where they lived until 1953. Ellen and Harry purchased Caldwell Place Farm and Richs Dairy when John and Myra Rich retired in 1953 and became the seventh generation on the farm. They were joined by a daughter Martha Amanda Rich, born in 1960. Ellen was the school nurse at Newark High School and than the Marion High School from 1973 until she retired in 1998.

3848 N. Main St., Marion, NY 14505 where the Memorial Service will be held 3PM immediatelyÂ
following calling hours. Masks and social distancing will be required. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made in memory to the Marion Community Christmas Program, 5100
